Furniture Reupholstery for Antique, Modern Era |
| Is all about taking upholstered furniture you love, and restoring and reupholstering it, in your taste |

Our client loved the patina of this chair. That the legs were falling off, and leather tearing if you breathed on it, required rebuilding the frame, and custom dyeing and staining and finishing of the leather, to match the original antique condition of the chair.
Reupholstering shows very little of the work that goes into it, until one sits on it. Original upholstery often contains coil springs, horsehair and cotton materials, which is often replaced by some reupholsterers without discussion with their clients, with cheaper foam rubber. The feel of foam rubber is distinctly different than coil spring upholstering. Coil springs provides firmer support, that can be expected to last many decades, even the better part of a century, compared to 5 -20 years at best for foam rubber. There are also hypoallergenic considerations to be made in the choice of padding materials, not only for horsehair, but also in the use of feathers or down, or synthetic substitutes. Down cushions can also be partitioned to prevent shSifting of padding, and eliminate frequent plumping of cushions, and yield a much firmer, more comfortable cushion that supports where you sit, instead of everywhere else.
There are many types of reupholstering that we do, and features provided as part of our service, some of which are listed below:
• Leather, with specialized stitching, including saddle stitching, or hand stitching
• Leather reupholstering with polyethylene or rubber backing, such as is found with Eames Lounge Chairs or Pollack Chairs manufactured by Herman Miller
• Any type of fabric, vinyl, or suede
• Victorian button tufted upholstery
• Superb pattern matching of repeats throughout reupholstering
|
 |
 |
• Leather reupholstering requiring the use of full thickness leather, such as in the Wassily arm chair
• Victorian button tufted upholstery
• Coil spring reupholstery with spring edge platforms, frequently found in French Art Deco chairs
• Hand stitched modern chairs, including various designs by Arne Jacobsen (Egg Chair & Swan Chair) manufactured by Fritz Hansen, Hans Wegner, and othersk
• Eero Aarnio Ball chair, Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair, Joe Columbo chairs
• Danish Modern chairs by Dux, and others. We use rubberized straps, Fagas straps, and other original strap materials for mid-century Modern chairs or sofas.
• Danish cord, Caning, rush, splint, and wicker work
• Corbusier lounge chairs
• Exotic leather chairs, including hair-on pony or cow hides, or zebra printed pony skin, manta ray, ostrich, deer skin, and others

The patina of an old leather sofa is wonderful. But , after 80 years or more, the leather is often too fragile to sit on. Our solution is to take a top-grain vegetable tanned hide, and then apply aniline dye, pigmented stains, and leather lacquer to replicate the patina of the original worn leather. We also work with exotic leathers including ostrich, buffalo, shark or manta ray, goat, calf, and suede.
CUSTOM HAND-STITCHING OF LEATHER:
Custom hand-stitching is necessary in many periods of furniture, including the Craftsman style shown below, and much more so for Art Deco and Modern furniture. Chairs such as the Eero Aarnio Swan or Egg Chairs are entirely hand-stitched. |

FRAME REPAIRS OF ANTIQUE SOFAS OR CHAIRS:

Unlike many other shops that merely mask a piece's structural defects before undertaking reupholstering, Olek Lejbzon & Co. carefully rebuilds or restores a piece of furniture's joints and other elements before reupholstering it. |

AMERICAN EMPIRE PERIOD SOFA FURNITURE- EXAMPLE OF SOFA HELD TOGETHER BY FABRIC-
Appearances can be deceiving. When a sofa is loose, joints are usually broken beneath.
|
| |
|
| This sofa had been reupholstered recently, and cobbled together with metal straps, nails and screws, breaking apart the frame further. The frame has mortise and tenon joinery throughout, but after decades of neglect an improper repairs, most of the joints broke in a cascade- one joint breaks, overstressing others, breaking them, and so on. Once the fabric was removed, the real condition of the loose frame was seen: |
