Hand-Stitching, Saddle-Stitching, and Simplification of Form
Mid-Century Furniture Designers incorporated simplification of form, often required hand-stitching. Good craftsmanship is apparent in hand-stitched leather or fabric sewing, showing tight and even stitching, and lack of creases or wrinkles. Saddle stitching is a decorative stitching incorporated mostly in modern leather upholstery, with two or three lines of parallel stitches around seams, that requires superb alignment skills by the upholsterer, and special double needle machines, for fine work.
The Pierre Paulin Ribbon Chair
Requires superb stitching skills to prevent fabric puckering.
Pierre Paulin Chairs - introduced in 60's, with polyurethane foam rubber padding. Due to brief life of foam rubber, the padding is hard and lumpy. |

Natural Latex Foam Rubber, and the development of Modern Upholstery Design
The invention of perforated natural latex foam rubber was the biggest innovation in mid-century furniture upholstery. Although invented decades before, natural latex foam rubber was not usable until perforated for the flow of air, to carry away perspiration. It replaced coil springs, horsehair, and other natural padding. It was applied in thin supportive, resilient layers. Latex enabled designs impossible with traditional padding. Natural Latex Foam Rubber lasts 40-60 years. Inexpensive synthetic foam rubber replaced latex in the 1960's, with life of 2 -20 years. Expensive hand-stitched labor is sensibly paired with natural latex foam rubber today.
Art Deco Club Chairs had coil-spring backs, cushions, seat platforms, even arms, and are complicated to rebuild. |

Leather, Top Grain Quality
The quality of leather determines its life. The manufacturing, or tanning process determines quality. Leather is split by knives into three layers:
•Top Grain(best)shows hair follicles. It is usually dyed rather than stained, never "filled". It is the best quality of leather. This top layer of the hide lasts 30 - 40 years. If the leather is not full grain, it is inferior.
• Mid Grain(is 2nd quality), can last 10-20 years. This leather is the middle layer of the hide. It is embossed by heavy patterned rollers, for a natural grain pattern, with hair follicle imitations. It is difficult to see the difference.
•Skiver(garbage) bottom layer of the cow hide, for desktops or books, is in cheap es Brazilian or Chinese furniture, stretches out and breaks on seating surfaces in 1 - 4 years. "Inexplicable" breaking, no manufacturer, distributor, or retailer admits using skiver. Without a warranty - buyer beware.
Modern furniture sometimes used Leather for structural, with Full thickness leather, as in Wassily arm chair B3 designed by Marcel Breuer.
Distressed New Leather
Old leather is widely admired, and easily ripped. Leather can be distressed by dyeing and staining to appear old, have the same life as new leather. Furniture owners prize distress matching the look of vintage furniture. |
