Italian marquetry chest, ca. 18th century.

Conservation of early 17th century Chest of drawers with extensive marquetry decoration. Inlaid missing veneer. This exquisite marquetry chest is owned by the daughter of a client Olek started working for in the 1950's. We have worked for three generations of this client's family.

INLAID MISSING VENEER

INLAID MISSING VENEER
Chest had intensive losses of marquetry and loose veneer, caused by shrinkage across the grain of the underlying carcase. Spaces between the carcass boards were filled in with wood inlays from inside to stabilize the marquetry above, loose veneer was adhered by heating, missing veneer inlaid, and the finish restored by touching-up and French polishing to a mirror finish using shellac, at the and thinned to pure alcohol content.
